Trademarks Registration in Jordan

Registribility

The trademark should comply with Articles 7 and 8 of the Trademarks Law to be eligible for registration. Briefly, the mark should have a distinctive character, in terms of names, letters, numbers, shapes, colours or any other combination of these, provided that they are recognisable by sight.

Trademark Registration Procedures and Timeline

An application must be submitted to the Industrial Property Directorate at the Ministry of Industry and Trade. It should contain all the relevant information, including the applicant's name, address, nationality, type of registration request, the trademark description, the meaning of the trademark, any information concerning the trademark, and the evidence of the ownership of the trademark.

The application must be filled out in Arabic and English, accompanied by the trademark image. It should be printed out in two copies and filed with the Directorate of Industrial Property Protection at the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In addition, the applicant must pay a registration fee of 100 hundred JDs must be paid, and will receive a "filing notice". The notice must be maintained as it contains essential information to inquire about the trademark status throughout the registration process. 

Within a period of one to three months from the filing date, the applicant will receive a mail notice either requesting amendment of the trademark or declaring the acceptance of the application, inviting the applicant to visit the Directorate to make the amendments or pay the publication fees (50 JD), as the case may be, within 30 days from the date of receiving the notice.

Upon paying the publication fees, an initial acceptance certificate will be issued.

After at least three months have passed from publishing the application in the Official Gazette without being objected to by any party, the trademark must be registered permanently by paying a fee of 300 JDs hence obtaining a registration certificate trademark.

The estimated timeline for the overall registration procedures is 6-12 months.

Duration of Protection

As per Article 20 of the Trademarks Law, the duration of title to trademark rights shall be ten years from the registration date and the applicant is entitled to renew the registry after the term has come to an end.

Official Fees

-Initial Filing (one class) 100 JDs

-Filing a joint trademark  200 JDs

-Publication fees    50   JDs

-Final registration fee  300 JDs
