Amman - The Jordanian Parliament ratified yesterday the UK - Jordan Association Agreement, which is expected to come into effect as of March 2021, upon completing the constitutional process and publication of the agreement in the official gazette.
The new association agreement is an outcome of Brexit to maintain continuity of trade relations between the UK and Jordan in the post-Brexit era, which was initially regulated under the EU-Jordan Association Agreement.
The new agreement preserves the preferential treatment relating to trade between both parties, resulting from the EU-Jordan Association Agreement, and it also provides a platform for further trade liberalization.
The agreement also establishes a free trade area in goods and regulates tariff rate quotas, rules of origin, customs, government procurement,  technical barriers to trade, competition, sanitary, and phytosanitary measures. It also governs trade in services and intellectual property protection.
As for trade balance, in 2019, UK exports to Jordan totaled 229.253 million US dollars. In contrast, Jordanian exports to the UK totaled 24.420 million US dollars in the same year.
Jordan is a WTO member and is currently a party to the Greater Arab Free Trade Agreement (GAFTA) with Arab countries, the Free Trade Agreement with Canada, the Association Agreement with the EU, the Free Trade Agreement with EFTA countries, the Free Trade Agreement with Singapore, and the Free Trade Agreement with the United States of America.
